In preparation for major train shed roof repairs at Grade 2 listed Scarborough Station, Colt Construction Limited working in partnership with Network Rail have erected a 2500m2 scaffold crash deck. The scaffolding has a 60-minute fire rating with mechanical ventilation and natural ventilation for train exhausts requiring complex fire modelling and M&E engineering. The station remained open at all times during the erection of the scaffolding and has been designed to avoid any disruption to the public, safe operation of trains and access and egress to the station including maintaining Fire Escapes at all times.
A variety of challenges were overcome to complete this works. Upon detailed examination of the victorian made platforms significant voids were present and these received mass pour concrete, in addition to the loose made ground conditions, which required a strengthening solution that could provide ground support for a load of 100kN/m2 to 36 scaffold towers before work could begin.
Initially considered a traditional solution which involved the installation of new concrete pad foundations at each of the 36 locations. However, this would have been too disruptive, time consuming and costly, so sought an alternative. Mainmark’s non-invasive proprietary Teretek resin injection solution.
Two train signals required relocating which were both completed without disruption to the operation of trains.
Lux level surveys and calculations were completed to ensure the correct lighting levels under the scaffolding at all times.
Following the erection of the scaffolding, a major refurbishment scheme for the station is planned including roof, truss, stone wall, clock tower, drainage and glazing repairs. This will include the installation of a new roof access system.
